“Jiyu” Seals

Dating to the Warring States (475-221 BC) and until Qin (221-207 BCE) Han (206 BCE to 220 CE), because ancient people respected heaven and earth, believed in ghosts and gods, and loved prosperity, they often used words with auspicious meanings to engrave into seals. Common “jiyu” seals are 有金 (Have gold), 萬歲 (Long live), 富 (Rich), etc.
The seal words reflect the influence of Confucianism. Motto seals can be divided into three categories. The first category is related to self-cultivation, such as 思言 (Longing for advice), 正行 (Act properly), and 敬事 (Work with cautiousness). The second category is related to “showing of will”, which bear phrases such as 高志 (Cherish high aspirations) and 有志 (Be ambitious). The third category is related to truthfulness such as 宜民和眾 (Beneficial and harmonious for the people), and 思言敬事 (Long for good advice and work with cautiousness).
