San Joaquin Kit Fox Kit with Hummingbird

The one-month-old kit excitedly surfaced from the confines of the family den. She had finally reached the age where she could begin to eat solid food. The father fox celebrated the occasion by bringing the kit a savory morsel to snack on. The kit welcomed her father’s offering, but didn’t rush back to the safety of the den to devour it. Instead, she ran towards me, as if saying, “Look at what I’ve got!” I was shocked at the sight of the tiny bird in animal’s mouth. I’d foolishly thought the ‘speedy’ hummingbird was a species less susceptible to being caught.
