In this introductory painting course, each student created 3 paintings including a self-portrait, a landscape, and a final painting on topics of their own choice. As evident in these selected exhibits, the progressive creating process in class not only trained up students’ painting techniques, it also awoke their sensitivity to the use of different tools, colours and composition in achieving a desired outcome, some of them were even able to develop their distinct visual languages that speak to themselves and the audiences within such short period of time.
In this introductory painting course, students learnt and appreciated the 20th – 21st century artists’ approaches to painting. Students, equipped with basic concepts and skills, used paintings as a medium of expression and communication. Many of them demonstrated brave attempts for a more experimental approach, and it is amazing to discover how these young people could set themselves free from the norm of painting.
